for your actual calls.

Our recommendation

Put Vocapable Free on your shortlist if you already control a Twilio number and need a small amount of AI answering. Choose paid Vocapable when its minute allowance, phone control and business handoff fit your regular calls.

For the smallest starting bill with a supplied number, evaluate Phonely’s recurring 100-minute free plan and Smith.ai’s 25-call free plan. Vocapable Free has a smaller minute allowance than Phonely and adds your Twilio bill. Upfirst can fit a few longer calls, and Goodcall can fit long conversations with repeat callers.

What a month can cost

Each scenario has equal-length calls: 25 × 2 minutes; 80 × 3 minutes; 300 × 3 minutes; or 100 × 10 minutes. The last scenario has only 25 different callers. Calls are sequential, with no transfer time, no non-AI waiting or voicemail time, and no additional numbers. Taxes, existing-provider forwarding and optional features are excluded.

Monthly billing. Read each cell’s qualifications; an unknown price is not zero.

Get a supported US local business number without setting up your own Twilio account. Search by city, state or area code during paid setup; actual inventory, the number quote, accepted billing/funding and call qualification determine activation.

Vocapable BYO totals exclude your Twilio number and carrier bill. The managed offer includes one standard US local number and the inbound/streaming service associated with AI minutes. Human transfers and non-AI incoming time are separately billed. Read the current allowance and phone-service terms.

Choose by the shape of the work

Small allowance with your own Twilio number

Vocapable Free provides 25 inbound AI calls and 75 AI minutes per month, whichever limit comes first. There is no automatic paid overage; AI answering stops at the cap and your configured fallback matters.

Short calls throughout the working week

At 80 three-minute calls, a minute allowance can be useful. Our published managed Starter example costs $49; Upfirst’s applicable monthly plan costs $59.95. This compares basic answering, not identical feature bundles.

Long conversations and repeat callers

Watch the meter that drives the invoice. Goodcall counts unique customers rather than minutes. A small repeat-caller group can favor that model even when Vocapable has a lower paid starting subscription.

Scheduling, texts and a broader front desk

Vocapable’s receptionist offer does not include SMS or full-call recording, and should not be purchased on an assumption of general calendar booking. Compare the specific actions advertised by Upfirst, Rosie, RingCentral and My AI Front Desk when those actions are required.

Reproduce the calculation

Minute plans: monthly subscription + max(0, billable minutes − included minutes) × extra-minute rate + phone and other required charges.

Call plans: monthly subscription + max(0, billable calls − included calls) × extra-call rate. A unique-customer plan substitutes distinct customers for calls.

For Vocapable, AI time includes listening, silence and tool waits. Apply the 30-second minimum to each AI-handled call before adding the month. We choose the lowest modeled paid tier, and include Free only when all stated call, minute and per-call limits fit. We do not assume the user upgrades automatically.

For Smith.ai, we compare ordinary-call Free overage against applicable paid tiers; chargeable advanced actions are excluded. For Upfirst and Goodcall, we choose the lowest published tier-plus-overage total. Rosie figures are tiers that cover the minutes because overage pricing was not verified. RingCentral figures use its published standalone overage; bundles may reduce the price. Dialzara totals above its verified entry allowance need a quote.

My AI Front Desk examples assume its monthly shared 1,000-credit pool is used only for voice beyond 200 minutes. We then count complete $10 reload blocks, rather than presenting a fraction of a block as the amount charged. Other activity using the shared pool changes the result.

No annual discount, introductory credit, negotiated price, acquisition cost or unverified productivity saving is included. The table covers eight selected competitors. Phonely’s free allowance is clear, but its paid cards and detailed table disagree; higher-volume prices remain unquoted.

Other low-price offers worth checking

Checked October 14, 2026: AI-Receptionist.com Essential advertises $14/month for 75 voice minutes and $0.25 per extra minute. That is below Vocapable’s paid starting subscription; compare the included voice and required phone features before buying.

LastWorker’s current pricing page advertises AI voice at $0.01/minute including carrier costs, with an optional $1/month number. Its older official contractor guide instead says ten cents per minute. This may reflect a price change, but we have not confirmed account billing or all conditions. Ask for the applicable tariff; we do not certify it as the cheapest working service or hide it because its advertised rate is lower.

Questions about cheap AI receptionists

What is the cheapest AI receptionist?

There is no single lowest total for every business. Vocapable has a $0 subscription for 25 AI calls and 75 AI minutes per month, whichever comes first, with your own paid Twilio account and number. Phonely publishes 100 free minutes with a supplied number. Smith.ai also publishes a free 25-call allowance with a supplied number, subject to its feature-specific charges. For paid service, compare call count, conversation length, phone costs and required actions.

Does a free AI receptionist mean a free phone number?

Not necessarily. Vocapable Free requires your own verified Twilio account and number, which Twilio bills separately. Smith.ai’s Free help article describes an included number. Compare number rental, carrier usage, forwarding, advanced actions and what happens at the limit before deciding.

Is Vocapable cheaper than Upfirst at 80 calls a month?

At 80 calls of three AI minutes each, Vocapable’s published managed Starter total is $49 before taxes, transfers or non-AI time. Upfirst Premium is $59.95 on monthly billing. Vocapable BYO is $39 plus Twilio. Longer calls or required actions can change the comparison.

Does the lowest price mean the best receptionist?

No. Try your real questions, interruptions, transfers, closed-hours behavior and fallback. Check whether your team can act on the call record. This guide compares published prices, not independently measured call quality, reliability or support.
