Smith.ai or Vocapable for a home-service phone line?
Price the calls after the free allowance, then inspect the handoff.

For a plumber, cleaner or snow-service operator, the useful result of answering is a request the team can act on: who called, where the work is, what they need and who should respond. Choose Vocapable when that focused intake and its paid minute allowance fit your calls, particularly when the business already controls its Twilio account. Choose Smith.ai when its supplied number, free allowance or additional front-office features better match the job. Low call volume can make Smith.ai the less expensive choice.
This is a buying guide published by Vocapable. The prices below were checked on October 16, 2026; the scenarios are examples, not measured customer results or identical feature bundles. The full Smith.ai comparison keeps the broader rate table.
A free receptionist still needs a phone arrangement
Smith.ai’s pricing lists a recurring Free plan with 25 calls and $3 per additional call. Its Free-plan explanation describes a supplied number and included features. It is not simply an expiring trial.
Vocapable Free supplies up to 25 answered calls and 75 AI minutes per month, whichever limit comes first. Each call has a five-minute ceiling and a 30-second minimum. There is one simultaneous AI call. Your business supplies its verified Twilio account and number and pays Twilio separately. The AI allowance stops when exhausted; there is no automatic paid overage.
That difference matters before comparing paid plans. Twenty five-minute conversations use 100 minutes: they exceed Vocapable’s free minute allowance even though there are fewer than 25 calls. Conversely, bringing an existing Twilio line may make the account arrangement more important to you than obtaining another included number.
Model a normal month and a busy month
Take an illustrative business with short requests and no paid add-ons. Every call in this table is at least 30 seconds. Managed Vocapable estimates assume one standard US local number and ordinary AI answering, with no connected transfers or incoming non-AI time.
| Monthly workload | Smith.ai published call charges | Vocapable BYO | Vocapable managed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 two-minute calls: 50 minutes | $0 under the Free allowance | $0 to Vocapable, plus Twilio | $49 Starter |
| 80 three-minute calls: 240 minutes | $162.50 on Pro 75: $150 + 5 × $2.50 | $39 Starter, plus Twilio | $49 Starter |
Smith’s Free plan with paid extra calls would be $165 in the second example, so the table uses its lower Pro 75 option. Taxes, optional services and phone costs outside the stated inclusions can change totals. Smith’s features are not priced away by this calculation. Vocapable’s paid Starter includes 250 AI minutes and up to two simultaneous AI calls on shared capacity; carrier charges remain separate on BYO.
Test the request that reaches your dispatcher
Build a short evaluation around actual business rules rather than a generic greeting:
- A caller is inside the service area and wants an estimate. Confirm the agent captures the location, requested work, callback details and enough context for your team.
- A caller asks for an arrival time you have not approved. Check that the agent avoids inventing a commitment and explains the next human step.
- Your transfer destination is unavailable. Review the configured waiting, message or voicemail fallback and the record left for the team.
- Two people call together. Test the purchased capacity and fallback rather than assuming an inexpensive plan has unlimited simultaneous answering.
Vocapable can use reviewed business information and configured transfer/fallback rules. It does not turn a requested time into a confirmed appointment. Its Receptionist offer does not include SMS or full-call recording. If those are essential, compare the exact competitor tier that supplies them and what you would need alongside Vocapable.
When we would choose each
We would shortlist Vocapable for a business whose month resembles the 240-minute example, whose team needs clear requests and whose phone arrangement fits BYO or the paid managed offer. The paid allowance is the concrete cost advantage in that scenario.
We would keep Smith.ai on the shortlist for very light usage, a supplied free number, or front-office functions that remove other work. A free plan that suits your business does not become a poor choice because a different provider wins a busier example.
Before connecting a business line, compare total receptionist costs and review the home-service workflow. You can also start with a two-minute receptionist preview. Verify your email to start the browser preview. It needs no Twilio account, phone number or payment card. It previews the conversation; live answering requires its own phone setup and checks.
